Google separates image searches as a spam update rolls out globally
Google released the September 2026 spam update, global, all languages, up to 2 weeks to finish. Search Console began splitting web results into text-based and multimodal, so a search that starts with a photo now counts on its own and arrives with no query attached. Google's video markup picked up creator and author. Business Profile is testing hours that Google extracts from a sentence you write instead of a grid you fill in. And ChatGPT Ads opened self-serve buying in 7 more Asian markets, passing 60 countries.
This Week's Signals
Google released the September 2026 spam update
Why it matters for your score
An assistant that cites you is usually citing a page Google still ranks, so a spam hit takes both at once, and the rollout runs up to 2 weeks before what you see is final.
Google video markup gains creator and author properties
Why it matters for your score
Attribution fields are how a machine works out who made something, and they keep arriving in the markup spec long before anyone calls them a ranking factor.

Why it matters for your score
If a model reads your description and writes the structured hours, what an assistant reads back to a local searcher is its interpretation of your sentence, not the grid you filled in.

Paid placement inside the assistant is now buyable in over 60 countries, so being mentioned organically is no longer the only way into the answer.
Emerging Audit Signals
Measurement keeps subdividing while each slice tells you less.
Web results now split into text and image-initiated, and the image half comes with no query attached.
Structured data is drifting from a form you fill in toward a sentence a model reads.
That moves the error from typos to interpretation, and interpretation does not show up in a validator.
Attribution properties keep landing quietly.
Nobody announces creator markup as a ranking factor, but the fields for naming who made a thing keep arriving first.
The answer surface is getting an ad auction faster than it is getting a citation standard.
Paid access is shipping ahead of credit.
What to do this week
- 1
Open the Search Console performance report, set search type to Web, and check whether the text-based and multimodal split has reached your property. If it has, note which pages take the image-initiated traffic, because the landing page is the only clue you get.
- 2
Read your Google Business Profile hours out loud as one sentence. If Google starts extracting hours from a description, an ambiguous line about seasonal or split hours is what a local assistant will repeat.
- 3
If you publish video, add the creator or author property to your VideoObject markup this week. It is one property, and it decides whether a machine can say who made the thing. A run of Faro /tools/ai-readiness-scan will list the pages with incomplete markup.
